Trees or shrubs. Leaves usually alternate, exstipulate, simple, entire or pinnately divided, generally coriaceous. Inflorescence axillary, terminal or cauliflorus, raceme, spike, paniculate or an umbel. Flowers monochlamydeous, usually zygomorphic, bisexual, hypogynous, showy, borne laterally either in pairs or sometimes singly; bracts subtending flower pairs usually small, sometimes absent. Perianth segments 3-5, usually 4, valvate, tubular in bud, commonly bent or rolled back when open; limb short, variously split at anthesis. Stamens 4, opposite perianth segments; filaments usually adnate to perianth and not distinct; anthers basifixed, usually bithecous, longitudinally dehiscent, connective often not prolonged. Hypogynous glands 4 (or 1-3) or absent, free or variously connate, alternate with tepal-stamens complexes. Ovary superior, unilocular, usually oblique, sessile or stipitate, ovules 1 or 2 (or more), pendulous, lateral or basal, mostly small; style often bent inward, sometimes wiry; stigma 1. Fruit a follicle, achene or drupe, coriaceous or woody. Seeds 1 or 2 (or few to many), sometimes winged.
