Flowers bisexual, rarely staminate, actinomorphic, hypogynous. Sepals (3-) 4-5, free or basally united. Petals (3-) 4-5, imbricate or valvate. Stamens equal or twice the number of petals or numerous; filaments free or mono- or polyadelphous; anthers bithecous, longitudinal dehiscence, introrse. Disc within stamens, crenate or lobed, sometimes large and long. Ovary usually of 4-5 free or connate carpels, superior, ovules 1- many, usually 2 in each loculus, placentation axile; styles free or united, as many as carpels. Fruit a capsule, berry, drupe or schizocarp (1-4 capsular cocci). Seeds oblong or reniform.
